Thailand Says No Tax on Crypto Gains Until 2029, Here’s What It Means

June 17, 2025

Thailand is taking a fresh step toward becoming a regional leader in digital finance.

The country’s cabinet has approved new tax relief measures that will exempt capital gains from personal income tax for individuals trading digital assets on platforms regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

This exemption is scheduled to take effect from 2025 through 2029 and is part of a broader national effort to attract innovation and investment in the digital asset sector.

Tax strategy aimed at growth and transparency

The move was announced by Deputy Finance Minister Chulaphan Amornvivat, who stated that the tax relief is designed to promote Thailand as a “Digital Asset Hub.”

By lifting income tax on crypto capital gains, the government hopes to increase foreign investment, encourage local entrepreneurship, and stimulate domestic economic activity. The strategy is expected to contribute at least 1 billion baht in tax revenue over the medium term, despite the near-term exemptions.

Officials are also preparing to align with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) standards for international information exchange, laying the groundwork for transparency and compliance across digital financial transactions.

The announcement follows an earlier decision in March 2023, when Thailand approved tax exemptions for investment token earnings to avoid the risk of double taxation.

Crypto policy signals long-term vision

Amornvivat emphasized that the policy isn’t just about tax cuts, it’s about signaling Thailand’s readiness to play a role on the global crypto stage.

He noted the move creates a meaningful opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs to scale internationally while helping build the infrastructure for a more open and verifiable digital asset economy.
