The National Hockey League (NHL) is skating into the prediction market arena, reportedly signing multi-year licensing agreements with Kalshi and Polymarket, two leading crypto-based prediction platforms.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the deal makes the NHL the first major U.S. professional sports league to officially partner with platforms in the onchain prediction market space, a move that could possibly change how fans interact with the sport and challenge established betting giants like DraftKings and FanDuel.

A historic move into prediction markets

The partnerships, expected to be formally announced this week, will allow Kalshi and Polymarket to use NHL trademarks in their respective platforms.

That means fans could soon see officially branded markets on topics like “Will the New York Rangers make the playoffs?” or “Who will score the most goals this season?”

Unlike traditional sportsbooks, prediction markets operate on the principle of decentralized forecasting, where participants trade shares in the outcome of events, turning collective sentiment into a live probability indicator.

Both Kalshi and Polymarket have experienced rapid growth throughout 2025. According to recent data, Polymarket’s new listings have surged month over month, while Kalshi’s daily active markets and trading volume have hit all-time highs.

This momentum, combined with the NHL’s entry into the space, signals a growing convergence between traditional sports organizations and emerging Web3-native financial platforms.
