The crypto world is once again watching a familiar drama unfold, this time around Story Protocol, a blockchain project built to manage intellectual property onchain.
The departure of one of its co-founders, announced on August 17, 2025, has not only surprised its community but also set off a wave of criticism and skepticism across Elon Musk’s social media, X.
Community reaction and concerns
Story Protocol, which launched in 2021 with backing from major investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), raised over $130 million on the promise of creating a programmable intellectual property layer.
The goal was straightforward: give creators the ability to tokenize, register, and monetize their work while ensuring licensing processes could be automated through blockchain technology.
That vision, however, has been overshadowed by the leadership shake-up. On X, posts quickly circulated framing the exit as a sign of deeper troubles.
One user, @davidarngar, deemed the move a “disappointing betrayal,” while @kccodes argued that the shift revealed wavering conviction within the founding team.
As @kccodes’s post pointed out, conviction in early-stage projects is often what aligns investors, employees, and partners. The lack of it, they argued, could create doubts about long-term direction.
Adding to frustrations, transaction fees on Story Protocol have reportedly dropped to around $17, raising questions about sustainability.

Comparisons and next steps
The situation has been compared to other recent founder exits in the crypto industry. Last December, an Aptos co-founder stepped away for ‘mental health break’ after securing a major vesting milestone.
While that event was largely met with understanding, the Story Protocol departure has fueled a narrative of leaders moving on too quickly, leaving communities behind. Viral posts even juxtaposed the two incidents with memes and images of founders celebrating, amplifying frustration among supporters.
Now, the project’s future rests with co-founder SY Lee, who has taken on the role of CEO. Community members have called on the new leadership to address fee concerns and reaffirm the project’s original mission.
Whether Story Protocol can reestablish trust may depend on how clearly and quickly it can demonstrate commitment to its long-term roadmap.
